excercise with kidsIn the list of these series, I had an idea to include something related to physical activity as well. Not only it is amazing but also helps you get involved in physical fitness as well. In this AtoZ Blogging Challenge with #BlogchatterA2Z I will be sharing the list of fun activities to do with your kids during the quarantine period. And, the word for today’s blog starts with the letter E. And, it is E for Exercise with kids.

Kids have an enormous amount of energy as they are growing up so it is always a good idea to encourage them to go out and play with their friends rather than sticking to their phone screen. I have always encouraged my daughter to play outside and make new friends and play new games with them. But due to the quarantine period, you can still exercise in your house while making it a fun-time activity.

Why Exercise With Kids?

Just like breathing and eating, I believe exercise should be a part of the daily routine. As a parent, we should always motivate them to be a part of any activity which involves some physical strength. Exercising on a mundane basis helps them to make them stronger and they will be able to give extra attention to their body. If your child is a teenager, then you should definitely do this activity as their hormones are evolving and exercise will assist to strengthen their body and mind.

Material Required for the Exercise With Kids

You don’t need a lot of material with this activity. You just need an exercising mat, a music system (if required) and access to YouTube video. Just type ‘Easy exercises with Kids’ and you can choose any video and imitate their steps.

How to do “Exercise With Kids”

Exercising with Kids doesn’t require a lot of effort but there might be a possibility that you need to push them a bit to exercise. Some kids don’t want to exercise, but if you are going to put their favorite song on speaker and do it with other family members, then I am sure they will not be able to resist it.

Key Learnings

Here are some of the key learning that I have discovered while exercising with my daughter:

  • Exercising not only develops their physical strength but also makes a positive impact on mental health as well.
  • It gives the right direction to spend their energy during this lockdown period.

My Overall Experience

Honestly, I had a great experience with this activity. I have played my daughter’s favourite playlist and other family members have participated in this activity too.

So, try out this activity with your kids too and don’t forget to share the experience in the comment section below. If possible, you can also share the pictures while working out or exercising with your kids and tag me, @sneha_261013 on Instagram.

And stay tuned for the next activity from the alphabet, ‘F’! Can you guess it?

Paving the way for my child’s better emotional development

EQ or Emotional Quotient refers to a person’s ability to understand his/her emotion along with the other person’s emotions, whereas IQ stands for Intelligence Quotient which indicates a person’s intelligence level.

IQ: A number that indicates a person’s reasoning or logical ability in comparison to the statistical norm.

EQ: implies the level of a person’s emotional intelligence.

Well, if you thought that’s how boring the article is going to be, let me tell you that’s not going to be the case. After all, these two abilities largely define the success of individuals and are quite interesting. I understand how my daughter is at an age when she is experiencing rapid physical and emotional growth.

I felt like writing about this as two of my colleagues were recently discussing what their children are good at. One is doing extraordinarily well in studies while the other is doing marvelously well in extracurricular activities. Now as they say, the grass is always greener on the other side. Both wanted their child to be like the other.

So, could this be done? Is there some magic? Some mantra? Probably a trick rolled up in someone’s sleeve? Can someone develop this? Just that perfect recipe?

It’s all about different patterns of development. The first child has more intelligence quotient whereas the other has a greater emotional quotient. Just in case you missed the definitions, you could scroll up.

To understand what it means for my child, I decided to take a closer look.

Enfagrow - Emotional Development

What’s more important?

We often talk or read about IQ, but EQ is something that is not usually talked about. But something that is neglected often turns out to be important. Remember the chapter you neglected while giving an exam and that was the most important chapter ever? That’s what it is all about.

Actually, we as parents can help develop emotional intelligence from a very young age, as young as from 2 years of age. I was quite surprised to know that. This is something that I observed with my daughter as well. And it made me curious about starting early with emotional development and taking the right steps at every point.

The mantra of Emotional Development

  • Conversations:

My daughter has surprised me from the time she was born. Starting from the point when she could only cry, she has progressively gotten better at communicating her needs and socializing. I had no idea about how good she could get at mimicking the people she came across. Her babbling slowly changed into meaningful words and then she could have simple conversations. It’s all a fascinating process. Her mimicking skills also made me realize how I had to watch what I said around her.

  • Activities:

Every parent remembers the moment their kid starts to crawl and then take the first step. When my daughter started finding her own way around the house, it was quite a moment for me. Over the period of time, I learned how kids become capable of sorting toys by type, size, and color. Apparently, after completing two years of age, it is the perfect time to get them to do new things and indulge in activities that will help them achieve cognitive milestones.

  • Nutrition:

Just like every other parent, I have paid special attention to my daughter’s diet. I have read a lot about how this is a crucial component of developing the emotional quotient of a child. I understand that her pickiness to eat certain foods shouldn’t get in the way of her getting the nutrients she needs. The right kind of nutrition is linked with communication, problem-solving and cognitive abilities in children which are closely linked with emotional intelligence. One of the most important nutrients is Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), a type of omega-3 fatty acid that acts as a building block of the brain during initial years.

More about DHA

Our body derives DHA from select food sources.

Some of them are as follows:

  1. OILY FISH such as salmon, tuna, sardines
  2. VEGETABLE OILS such as flaxseed, soy, canola
  3. OTHER SOURCES such as chicken, eggs

Of Emotional Quotient, DHA & Enfagrow A+

Enfagrow - Emotional DevelopmentClinical studies have shown that young children who received expert-recommended levels of DHA showed superior brain development in terms of:

  • Problem-solving,
  • Visual acuity,
  • Verbal intelligence, and
  • IQ

This was in comparison to those young children who did not get any. I researched a bit more and found that a regular diet might not be sufficient to give my child expert recommended levels of DHA. That’s when I came across Enfagrow A+, a fortified food. I have also been giving my child a daily dose of Enfagrow A+ with a glass of milk to ensure healthy growth. I have also understood the importance of keeping track of my child’s growth.

You can buy Enfagrow A+ here!

Is my child’s growth on track?

As parents, there are certain development milestones we notice about our children, be it babbling or walking. Though every child grows at a different pace, you can keep track of certain milestones in emotional development with some observations as described below. I have been following this for my daughter as well.

Age PeriodRegulation/CopingExpressive BehaviorRelationship Building
Infancy:
0 to 12 mos.
Infant is self-soothing and learning to modulate reactivity.

In service of coordinated action, Regulation of attention is required.

During stressful circumstances, the infant relies on caregivers for supportive “scaffolding”.

In some expressive channels, behavior synchrony with others.

Discrimination increases in others’ expressions.

Expressive responsiveness to stimuli under contingent control increases.

Coordination of expressive behaviors with emotion-eliciting circumstances increases as well.

“Peek-a-boo” and other such social games.

Social referencing is another way to increase relationship building.

Infants could even fake crying if they feel they aren’t getting the necessary attention.

Toddlerhood:
12 mos.to 2½ years
Self-awareness and consciousness of emotional response comes to light.

Irritation might occur due to constraints and limits imposed on expanding autonomy and exploration needs.

After self-evaluation and self-consciousness evident in expressive behavior accompanying of shame, pride, coyness is common.

Verbal comprehension and production of words for expressive behavior and affective states increases.

Tries to Anticipate different feelings towards different people.

Discrimination of others’ emotions and their meaningfulness is significant.

The emergence of empathy and prosocial action.

Preschool:
2 to 5 years
Symbols can provoke distress, but Symbolic access facilitates emotion regulation.

Child’s evaluation of and awareness of own feelings and of emotion-eliciting events extends with communication.

While playing and teasing adoption of pretending expressive behavior could be used.

Facial expressions could be false, and this could mislead parents. This is known as pragmatic awareness.

Child’s understanding of social transactions and expectations for comportment could be elaborated through communication with others.

Behavior towards peers or friends could be sympathetic and pro social.

Increasing insight into others’ emotions.

Early Elementary School: to 7 yearsSelf-conscious emotions (e.g., embarrassment) are targeted for regulation.

Prominent coping strategy still prevalent which is through seeking support from caregivers but reliance on situational problem-solving increases and is evident as well.

Adoption of “cool emotional front” with peers.Coordination of social skills with one’s own and others’ emotions is significant.

Early understanding of consensually agreed upon emotion “scripts.”

This self-explanatory chart can help you understand the different levels of your child’s emotional development.

Aiding emotional development:

A child’s development into successful adulthood shapes up just like the way a pot comes into being with the perfect mixture of clay, sponge, water and the potter’s touch. In case of a child’s development, nutrition, the affection of parents and care all come together. As your child deserves the best, you can educate yourself more about emotional development and take steps in the right direction.

Probiotics: A Healthy diet of Life

“A Healthy Body helps to lead a Healthy Life”. It is very essential to maintain a proper health. The best way to improve health is to eat healthy because what you eat is closely linked to your health. In many cases, illness and injuries occur due to the lack of care of your body. One of the best ways to have a healthy body is firstly to have the proper Digestive system. The digestive system is said to be the root cause of all illness. A Digestive system consists of good and bad Bacteria, a proper balance of good and bad bacteria contributes to the healthy Digestive system.

Research shows that there are more than 400 species of good and bad Bacteria in your gut. It is therefore very essential to maintain a good balance between these Bacteria for the overall health of the body. Most of these Bacteria’s resides in the intestine. The good and bad Bacteria supports in the digestion of food. A healthy working of intestine helps in filtering and eliminating harmful Bacteria and waste products.

ProbioticsThere are various causes of imbalance of good and bad Bacteria like Lack of sleep, Emotional stress, poor diet, and bad eating habits and overuse of antibiotics etc. When there is an imbalance of good and bad Bacteria, i.e. when the population of bad Bacteria exceeds the good Bacteria in the gut, it leads to several health problems like infections in the urinary system, Diarrhoea, skin infections, Allergies, Fatigue, etc. Knowing the consequences of the growth of bad Bacteria in your gut it’s very essential to increase the number of good Bacteria in your gut. Probiotics are the one which helps to solve this problem.

Probiotics in the simple term are a type of ‘Good Bacteria’ or can say are the live micro-organisms found in some foods and supplements. Probiotics help in maintaining a healthy balance of Bacteria in the gut. Even if you are living a healthy lifestyle and having healthy food like vegetables, fruits, carbohydrates or proteins still you cannot obtain the Probiotics from these foods. Basically, there are few food items which are the natural source of Probiotics. You can get Probiotics naturally from cheese, Yogurt, tempeh, miso, and kimchi. There are also Probiotics supplements available in the market if taken in right dosage helps in the optimal health of your gut.probioticsProbiotics are basically live Bacteria and yeasts that are good for your digestive system. Whenever we normally think of Bacteria, we consider them as something that causes diseases or other health problems. But this is not true. As mentioned above, our body is full of good and bad Bacteria and the Probiotics are called ‘good’ or ‘helpful’ bacteria because they help keep your gut healthy.

Probiotics contain following micro-organisms in it:

  1. Saccharomyces-

This is a type of micro-organism found in yeast which helps to treat acne problems and Diarrhoea. It also helps in reducing the side effects caused due to gastric ulcer treatments.

  1. Streptococcus-

This micro-organism produces the enzyme lactase, which helps in the prevention of bowel inflammation and lactose intolerance.

  1. Lactobacillus-

These type of micro-organisms are found in the urinary, digestive and genital system. They are also found in fermented food like yogurt and helps prevent skin disorders, respiratory infections, and urinary tract infections.

  1. Bifidobacteria-

This type is found in a healthy colon and appears in the intestinal tract of babies within the days of birth. They prevent dental cavities and bad cholesterol.

There are several benefits of Probiotics:

  1. Preventing and treating skin infections, Urinary tract infections.
  2. Helps in treating Skin conditions like eczema.
  3. Helps in treating Allergies and Asthma.
  4. Lactose intolerance.
  5. Helps in treating stomach and respiratory infections especially in children.

After knowing several benefits of Probiotics, the first question arises in mind is How do Probiotics work…? Researchers are still trying to find as how does Probiotics exactly to work..? It is said that when you lose good Bacteria in your body after taking antibiotics or due to any other reason, Probiotics helps to lower the number of bad bacteria in your gut by replacing them with the good Bacteria. They also help in maintaining the good balance between good and bad Bacteria in your gut.

Some suggest for Prebiotics to maintain the healthy digestive system. Although Prebiotics if selectively utilized helps to increase healthy Bacteria in your gut but still there is a major difference between Probiotics and Prebiotics. Just like Probiotics, Prebiotics isn’t a food but they are found in various foods. Prebiotics are classified as non-digestible food ingredients that can be utilized by Probiotics. They aid digestion and increases the production of valuable vitamins. The major source or Prebiotics is dietary fiber which naturally occurs in fruits and vegetables. We can say about Prebiotics as the fuel that feeds Probiotics successful restoration of good Bacteria.ProbioticsDupont range of Probiotics popularly known as HOWARU can add documented health benefits to dairy products, frozen desserts, beverages etc. HOWARU range are scientifically proven for the smooth functioning of the digestive system and improves the body’s immune system.  Dupont’s Probiotic dietary supplements enhance in maintaining the digestive system and immune system of the all age group consumers.

After knowing what exactly Probiotics is..? how it helps for the healthy functioning of the body…? I can understand why our elders always used to insist to have either a bowl full of curd or buttermilk while having lunch. The amount of Probiotics present in a bowl of curd or a glass of buttermilk helps to increase the number of good Bacteria in your gut. But in many cases, the small amount of curd or buttermilk or other dairy products are not enough to eradicate the number of bad Bacteria in your body, in such cases you can opt for Probiotic supplements available in the market. Approximately we need 40bns/perday of Probiotics cfu/ml.

The FDA regulates Probiotics as food items and not like medications. But still, in some cases, the consumer might have mild side effects such as gastric problem, upset stomach, diarrhea for the first couple of days after taking supplements. So, it is always suggested to first consult your doctor and then opt for the Probiotics supplements.
