Knitting With Kids

These summer days are meant to be enjoyed with the family and staying indoors with them. But have we ever thought about the time when our naanis and daadis were young? With the lack of technologies and resources, how were they going to spend their summer days? One of the most loved and cherished hobbies of their time is Knitting, isn’t it? And, nowadays, knitting is done by machines. That’s why I have included K for knitting in this fun activity to do with your kids during the quarantine period.

If you want to pass this hobby to the upcoming generations, then you should teach your kids more about knitting. And, I am sure they would be happy to learn about it.

Knitting with KidsIn this blog, rather than going to the advanced level of knitting, it is always important to develop interest by teaching them finger knitting and then proceeding with actual knitting with the sticks.

Why Knitting With Kids?

Knitting with kids can be an interesting hobby if they are being taught perfectly. As you all know that I am pregnant, and my mother-in-law has started knitting sweaters for the baby already. So, Angel was mesmerized by how simple yarn can make a brand new sweater.

So, she insisted that she wanted to learn knitting. And, I started with teaching her finger knitting as it is easier and perfect for a beginner.

Material Required for the Knitting With Kids

For this activity you just need three things and that are: different colors of yarn (you can choose one color too), a pair of scissors and of course your fingers.

How to do “Knitting With Kids”

Here are the steps that I have the following while doing knitting with kids:

  • Step 1: Take the strand of the yarn between your thumb and palm. And, then try to create the shape 8 between the first two fingers while covering your fingers.
  • Step 2: Repeat the same loop above the first one. Then, leave the second loop in place and take the first loop and slip it off to the end of the finger.
  • Step 3: Now, leave the end of the yarn that has been stuck on your thumb and give it a proper tug.
  • Step 4: And, continue this process until you are happy with the whole knitting process.

Replace the fingers with the knitting sticks to give it a professional and clean look. If you want me to make a video on how to do knitting with kids then let me know in the comment section.

Key Learnings

Initially, it was hectic to teach the proper steps as they will tend to make mistakes but you need to be patient with them and let them make mistakes.

My Overall Experience

I loved the whole experience of knitting with kids and Angel enjoyed it out. I think she will also be helping to make more knitted clothing items for her baby sibling.

So, try out this activity with your kids too and don’t forget to share the experience in the comment section below. If possible, you can also share the pictures of your beautiful knitted clothing item that you have made with your kids and tag me, @sneha_261013 on Instagram.

#BlogchatterAnd stay tuned for the next activity from the alphabet, ‘L’! Can you guess it?
